There are a lot of interesting days to be aware of around this time of year: Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and of course, the various December holidays like Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and many others from various traditions.
But there’s one important holiday that encompasses all traditions from around the world and captures the spirit of gratitude and giving and it’s happening today. Welcome to GivingTuesday — a global generosity movement calling on the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.
GivingTuesday was created in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. Since that time, this once humble, local initiative has become its own organization that has turned the first Tuesday in December into a global giving movement.
It’s not surprising that GivingTuesday has become such a well known movement. In fact, many studies have shown that being in service in all of its various forms has a positive influence on our own happiness. Being in service has been shown to provide us with a sense of purpose, responsibility, and belonging. It brings us a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment and even boosts our “attitude of gratitude.” And it has marked physical and mental health benefits that can even prolong our lives.
On this day, Home & Hope urges you to get involved — whether that’s making someone smile, carrying out a random act of kindness, volunteering for a local charit, or even contributing money to a nonprofit that resonates for you or your community. Whatever you have to give, we hope that you enjoy this day in the spirit of generosity and kindness. And that you receive generosity and kindness in return.
